Romania's Market Moment: Why Interactive Brokers Just Opened the Door to Bucharest
The Bucharest Stock Exchange is having its moment. After a record-breaking 2025 and an MSCI upgrade, US giant Interactive Brokers has added access to Romanian equities, putting one of Europe's best-performing markets in front of a global audience.
For years, Romania's stock market was something of a well-kept secret: strong returns, but walled off behind local paperwork that discouraged most foreign investors. That is starting to change. In August 2026, US brokerage giant Interactive Brokers added access to the Bucharest Stock Exchange, opening one of Europe's best-performing markets to a global audience in a far more frictionless way than before.
A record-breaking run
The timing is no accident. The Romanian market has been on a remarkable run: the benchmark BET index crossed the 20,000-point mark for the first time in 2025 and closed the year at a historic high of around 24,439, its strongest annual performance since 2009. That momentum carried into the first half of 2026, cementing Bucharest's reputation as one of the continent's most rewarding, if underfollowed, equity markets.
Why the Interactive Brokers move matters

Until now, a non-resident who wanted to buy Romanian shares typically had to open an account with a local broker and navigate unfamiliar bureaucracy. By listing Bucharest alongside more than 170 other global exchanges on a single platform, Interactive Brokers removes much of that friction. International investors can now fold Romanian equities into a worldwide portfolio without leaving the interface they already use every day.
From frontier to the radar
The access upgrade lands on top of another milestone: Romania was elevated to MSCI's Advanced Frontier Market status, a classification that nudges the country closer to the mainstream and onto the screens of large institutional funds. Combined with a market capitalisation of roughly 141 billion dollars across some 389 listed companies, these signals suggest Bucharest is maturing from a niche play into a market that global money managers can no longer comfortably ignore.
The technology angle
It is not only energy and banking heavyweights driving the story. Romania's technology sector is increasingly visible on the exchange. Software group AROBS Transilvania Software reported first-half 2026 turnover of about 292 million lei, up 36 percent year-on-year, with net profit surging roughly 121 percent. Newer names are arriving too: automation specialist IT Genetics began trading on the exchange's AeRO segment in May 2026, a sign that the local pipeline of listings is broadening beyond the usual blue chips.
None of this makes Romania a risk-free bet. Frontier and emerging markets can be volatile, and easier access cuts both ways: capital that flows in quickly can also leave quickly. But the direction of travel is unmistakable. With record indices, an MSCI upgrade and now a gateway through one of the world's largest brokers, the Bucharest Stock Exchange is enjoying a rare moment in the global spotlight, and for once the wider world is actually watching.
