Romania's Betting Giant Goes Global: Inside Super Technologies' Blackstone-Fuelled Land Grab

business2026-08-27 · 3 min read · 72 reads

Backed by a €1.3 billion war chest from Blackstone, the company once known as Superbet is on an aggressive international march , swallowing rivals at home, planting its flag in Greece, and fuelling speculation about a blockbuster IPO.

Romania is not often thought of as a launchpad for global corporate empires, yet one homegrown company is quietly rewriting that assumption. The betting and technology group once universally known as Superbet has embarked on an aggressive international expansion, and the ambition on display is anything but small.

A billion-euro war chest

The engine behind this ambition is money, and a great deal of it. Back in early 2025, the group secured a landmark refinancing agreement worth 1.3 billion euros, arranged with the heavyweight investment firms Blackstone and HPS Investment Partners, giving it enormous financial firepower to pursue its goals.

That capital was never intended to sit idle in a bank account. The company was explicit that the funds would provide a financial platform to execute a bold growth strategy, one built around expansion into lucrative new markets such as Brazil, a war chest for mergers and acquisitions, and broad investment in its own technology and operations.

A new name for a new era

Signalling just how much the business has evolved, the group underwent a significant rebrand at the end of 2025, adopting the new corporate identity of Super Technologies. The shift in name is telling, positioning the firm not merely as a bookmaker but as a technology company operating in the entertainment and gaming space.

The new identity was quickly followed by decisive action on the acquisition front. In February 2026, Super Technologies agreed to acquire the online operations of a domestic rival, Maxbet, covering its business and customer base in both Romania and Malta, a move designed to cement its dominance on home turf, pending approval from Romania's Competition Council.

Planting the flag abroad

While consolidating at home, the group has simultaneously been looking outward with real intent. Its launch in Greece in April 2026 was a particularly significant milestone, representing the company's sixth market entry overall and, crucially, the very first one to be directly backed by Blackstone's substantial 1.2 billion euro private equity investment.

Entering a new country, however, is far from a guaranteed success, and the company is under no illusions about the challenge ahead. In Greece, it has set itself the demanding target of reaching a top-three position within three years, a goal that will require it to displace well-entrenched local incumbents such as Stoiximan, Novibet and OPAP.

Management has openly acknowledged that dislodging these established players will demand sustained and disciplined execution rather than a quick splash of marketing. It is a candid admission that reflects the reality of a fiercely competitive industry where deep pockets alone do not guarantee victory over rivals who know their home market intimately.

The IPO question

Hanging over all of this activity is the tantalising question of what comes next for ownership of the business. Speculation about a potential public listing swirled around the company over the past year, fuelled in particular by the appointment of the seasoned technology and entertainment figure Hans-Holger Albrecht as its Executive Chairman.

Such a high-profile appointment is often read by markets as a company grooming itself for the intense scrutiny of public shareholders. As of now, though, no initial public offering has actually been announced, leaving investors and industry watchers to speculate about whether, and when, this fast-growing champion might decide to float.

Punching above its weight

Taken together, the refinancing, the rebrand, the acquisitions and the overseas launches paint a portrait of a company operating with a level of ambition that far outstrips its national origins. Super Technologies is aggressively leveraging private equity muscle to transform a Romanian success story into a genuine international contender.

Whether it ultimately achieves the giant status it so clearly craves will depend on its ability to win over new customers in unfamiliar markets while fending off entrenched competition. But for a company born in Bucharest, the sheer scale of the bet it is placing on itself is, in every sense, a story worth watching closely.
